How Important is Pipe Insulation

Head to Toe Insulation
When talking about insulation, it is vital to know how important pipe insulation is. Namely, your water supply system needs to be well protected from potential damaging effects such as abrupt temperature changes which can cause the pipes to freeze or overheat and not only damage the pipework itself but also have some other negative consequences you've been trying to avoid by insulating your walls and floors, for example. Although it may seem that this should not be positioned high on your list of priorities, reading the following lines and understanding everything that can go wrong if your pipes are not properly protected, will hopefully change your mind.
How Pipe Insulation Works
When choosing proper pipe insulation material, there are a few things to keep in mind. The insulation needs to protect the pipes from extremely high or low temperatures which means that the material used needs to be able to withstand such extreme temperatures and not burst into flames when in contact with let's stay steaming hot water going through the pipes. Also, pipes are especially subject to damp and moisture bearing in mind their position, why the material chosen also needs to be able to withstand moisture and not get damaged itself or even worse allow the pipes to corrode over time. Another thing worth the mention is that U and R values of the insulation material are also regulated by the UK Copper Board Water bylaw pipe insulation requirements which need to be consulted when choosing the best insulation material.
Now, there are a few mouse pad materials that are most commonly used, including rock wool which is especially applicable due to its water resistance and the ability to withstand high temperatures which comes in handy when insulating your pipes. Now, you can either order rock wool pre-cut and ready-made so that it fits your pipes or you can simply purchase pu foam for soundproof material and make it fit your pipes which is a more economical option since you can use the material not only for your pipes but also to insulate your walls or floors and use the leftovers that will go around your pipes and simply be joined at both ends. Another commonly used material is glass wool which has similar composure like the previously mentioned rock wool, but also has great soundproofing properties which can be very important since, depending on their position, pipes can be a great source of noise. Finally, another popular material in pipe insulation is pur block foam found as PUR, PIR and phenolic foam which has great thermal values and, although a bit more expensive, can go a long way since you will need less material to meet the recommended values.
What will You Get?
If you are wondering what you will get with proper pipe insulation, we will try to give you a list of all the positive effects of having a well protected pipework:
The first and probably the most important thing is most definitely the fact that this way you will be able to contribute to regulating the inner temperature and prevent energy (read money) losses. Namely, things are pretty simple. When hot water is running through the pipes, it will inevitably cause the pipe surface to get hotter in time and emit some heat. The radiated heat will affect the temperature within the room by raising it, which is not a welcoming thing during hot summer months since you will have to cool down the space by turning your air condition on more frequently which will result in increased electricity bills and energy consumption. If your pipework is covered with an efficient insulation material, it will simply prevent heat flow. However, the radiated heat from your pipes surface does not necessarily has to be a bad thing but can be very useful during the winter when the emitted heat can actually increase the inner temperature and save you some energy in the process. The only thing you have to keep in mind if you decide to let your pipes be a heat source is that such a system requires a well and fully insulated building structure which will keep the radiated heat in rather than letting it escape outside.
Another extremely important thing that you have to avoid is pipe freezing since it can have very serious consequences like pipe break and thus water leakage which can be very expensive to fix. Namely, when exposed to low temperatures, water will eventually freeze and expand causing the pipes to break. This can only be postponed, unfortunately not fully prevented with proper pipe insulation which will simply maintain a more stabile temperature of the pipework resulting in more time required for the water to reach the freezing point.
Last but not least are moisture and condensation problems that are a very common issue with pipework. Since the water conducted through the pipes is usually much higher or much lower that the temperature of the air, such temperature difference causes moisture and condensation to occur in the form of tiny droplets of water which you can spot on your pipes. Now, since this is a constant appearance, all the excessive moisture will cause corrosion of the pipes and their deterioration which is never the cheapest of problems to fix. Proper insulation material which, as previously mentioned, needs to be water resistant will prevent this from happening since it will decrease the temperature differences between the pipe surface and surrounding air, thus minimizing the risk of condensation.
