Screen Printing – From Simple Manual Labor to Multi-Processing Rotary Machine

Silkscreen printing or screen printing has been around since the Song Dynasty (960–1279 AD) in China and it was the first stencil printing or stenciling in the world. In the early 20th century silk was used to print shirts, banners and other embroidery but by the 1970s the polyester mesh was invented, which provided great quality prints ever since. There are two platforms that can be used in screen printing and the first one is the self-adhering green film that you can use to cut out any design you like and the photographic or photo-stenciling screen printing. 

The latter uses a combination of emulsifiers and sensitizers chemical agents that become photo-reactive, leaving a negative image on the screen that will precisely copy any black & white image you burn on it; meaning you can make your prints as detailed as possible.

Before 1967 screen printing was a purely manual labor until Michael Vasilantone arrived and invented the rotary screen printing machine that revolutionized industrial printing that it is now possible to print thousands of t-shirts and other custom embroidery under an hour!

Vasilantone's patented designs are still being used today by most businesses capitalizing their talents on this industry. Safer and non-toxic chemicals are now being used by manufacturers in both the paint and the stenciling materials. 

These days screen printing has become an essential part of our society and the demand for it surges year-in and year-out; and while we have edged towards a futuristic society with our iPads, iPhones, laptops and other handheld devices, screen printing may still retain its original form. Maybe a few "high-tech" additions will be added soon but the printing process on both t-shirts and other custom embroidery will basically remain the same.
